Bond 2023 Overview
On February 17, 2023, the Mount Vernon ISD Board of Trustees called for a $63.9 million bond election to be considered by the community on May 6th. This decision started with the work of the Bond Citizen Advisory Committee more than 18 months ago, in September of 2021. Through this process, our students, parents, staff and community worked collaboratively to study and prioritize our most critical facility needs.
Texas school districts do not receive state funding for renovating or building new schools. Instead, they must receive funds through school bond elections.
The 2023 Bond will ask voters to consider a $63.9 million package in two propositions.
Proposition A ($47.7 million) – New Media Center, Fine Arts, New VO Ag Facility, Cafeteria Expansion, New Office Complex and Main Entrance at the Middle School, Renovations to the Media Center, Renovations to Special Education Classrooms and Current Cafeteria, Administration Renovations to the High School and District Administration Building and Renovations of Auditorium.
Proposition B ($16.2 million) – Baseball and Softball fields, renovations to restrooms and concessions, turf football field, new home stands, new pre-manufactured press box and tennis courts.
Homeowners age 65 and older will not be impacted by the passage of the bond propositions if they have filed for and received the Over 65 Homestead Exemption with the Franklin County Central Appraisal District. Their school district taxes will not exceed the frozen dollar amount. Ballot language will include the statement "THIS IS A PROPERTY TAX INCREASE." Legislation passed in the 2019 Texas Legislative Session (HB 3) requires that school districts include this language, regardless of the bond's impact on the district’s tax rate.
Early voting begins April 24 and ends May 2. Election Day is Saturday, May 6
